ENRICHMENT

Our May enrichment will include lessons on butterflies. We have already received our caterpillars and are watching them grow. They will crawl to the top of their container and attach themselves to form their chrysalides. We will then place them in our butterfly houses and all three classrooms hope to have beautiful butterflies that we will release out into the world in our outdoor classroom.

We will expand our butterfly enrichment with a trip to the Krohn Conservatory for the Butterfly Show. Each week 1000 butterflies are released into a lush landscape. The butterflies are from Africa this year. Students can observe their beautiful colors, eating habits, and a butterfly may even light on their finger!

We have found some very interesting websites that will enrich your child’s butterfly experience:

May is Mary’s Month

May is the month dedicated to Mary. We had the May Crowning celebration in church last Friday, May 2nd. You might want to have a special place in your home to honor May this month.

Accelerated Reading

Just a reminder that your student still has this quarter to achieve their goal of five points in our Accelerated Reading program and receive the AR award. Please encourage them to participate.

Summer Reading

Over the summer it is very important for your child to read every day. Here are some suggestions to help you keep up those important skills:

  1. Listen to your child read aloud to you. Let them read anything they want (TV schedules, cereal boxes, magazines, newspapers.)
  2. Research shows reading aloud to your child is probably the most important thing you can do to encourage your children’s success.
  3. When reading with your child try the following: (a) Stop before the end of the story. Ask your child to predict what he thinks may happen next, or (b) If you are reading a poem, encourage your child to guess what the next rhyming word may be.
  4. On trips or short errands in the car: Ask you child to read as many road signs as they can. Soon they will be remembering all of them! Can they identify state names on license plates? Our soon-to-be-second graders can read some billboards! Create your own games with reading signs.

Helping the children learn to love reading will pay off better than nearly anything else parents can do to help their children do well in school.
